The moss tents story
In 1955, my father, Bill Moss, invented and designed the Pop-Tent. Today, his invention is widely credited with changing the world of camping. In 1975, he and my mother, Marilyn Moss, co-founded Moss TentWorks in Camden, Maine, to design and produce innovative, high-performance camping tents which also helped to mold the future for expedition and camping tents. Moss Adventures is a brand of merchandise, expeditions, and outdoor experiences inspired by what my parents had created for the world of adventurers, explorers and dreamers.
We will be leading a select team of clients on remote adventures both in the USA and other parts of the world. Our platform will be unique and interactive in that we will be conducting skills training during the course of the travels. Skills such as wilderness medicine and first aid, off-road driving and recovery, remote travel survival techniques, off-grid cooking, map reading and so much more. We intend to do rerunning of some of the Land Rover routes such as the Trans-America Trail, the Mojave Trail, the Great Divide expedition route as well as organized trips to Prudhoe Bay, the Ice Road, etc. We will also be fielding exploration Expeditions to some of the newly discovered remote Mayan cities in Guatemala , and the Yucatán. All of these events and training schools will be conducted while closely adhering to the “tread lightly” philosophy. Our vehicles will definitely not be showroom vehicles, they are all kitted strictly with expedition purposes in mind, the Land Rover Discovery trucks will be the second tier of the expedition packages we intend to offer, with the land Rover Defenders to be built after that as the top shelf experience package, less comforts, more expedition built.
THE BAJA EXPERIENCE
Join us as we journey this great area, where fertile oceans meet arid desert. As we explore missions founded in the 1600’s, enjoy dolphins escorting us to watery playgrounds where whales play and show off their new babies to excited visitors, a land dotted with UNESCO world heritage sites, dive with whale sharks and bask in the warm waters of beaches that constantly rank in the top 10 in the world. Enjoy the wonders of Baja from the border to the tip, Cabo San Lucas and everything in between as we dine on local fare and enjoy a Baja most aren’t fortunate enough to experience.
Experience the challenges America’s original settlers faced when crossing the USA by horse and wagon as we drive the very same trails that America’s original overlanders endured. Camp in the very same historic places that these pioneers camped as we circle the wagons dine on authentic “chuck wagon” meals while we regale the stories of these pioneers.
Snakes ‘n’ Gators
Come experience two of the worlds most prehistoric apex predators, as we trek through the vast ecosystem of the Florida Everglades in search of snakes and gators that can grow to 15 feet in length or more, learn how these prehistoric creatures hunt and consume their prey, learn how to safely capture these huge beasts.
Camp out in the middle of this vast remoteness with black bears and the mating calls of huge territorial gators.
Trips will include airboat rides to remote encampments in the middle of the swamps as well as gator wrestling tips and tricks.
Backwoods of Death Valley
There is no doubt that Death Valley is a national treasure, it’s unique terrain and extreme environment makes it the backdrop for many adventures, but there is a Death Valley that only the most adventurous of travellers is lucky enough to experience. Come with us as we explore the remotest regions of Death Valley such as the homestead hideout where the infamous Ted Bundy was finally captured. Stand in awe as we offer our own theories of how massive rocks leave trails as they mysteriously move seemingly on their own across the plains of The Devils Racetrack, as we tour Scotty’s castle and marvel at the craftsmanship of one man's work as he builds his amazing home in this harsh environment. Learn the old ways of old school mining as people of days gone by sought their fortunes from the grounds below. Sleep beneath star-filled skies as we camp at historic geologists cabins and learn the dangers that are often faced in America’s harshest location.
The Pony Express
Nothing has captured the imagination of young children growing up as the old Wild West, and what old Wild West history would be complete without the Pony Express? Images of young daredevil horsemen and women being chased by injuns, bandits and villains alike, all to deliver messages from one side of the USA to the other. For such a relatively short lived service it left an indelible mark in the history books and still lives on in the imagination of adults and kids alike.
Come with us as we retrace the steps of this iconic route and learn of the many dangers these young heroes faced. Drift off to sleep under star-filled skies and the sounds of long gone galloping horses speeding across the countryside.
This 575-mile route thoroughly explores the Cascade Mountains beginning in Stevenson, WA and making it to the Canadian border at Night Hawk. Views of the massive volcanic mountains from the dense forest in the southern part of the route are stunning and the open arid pine forests of the central part of the route showcase the diversity of Washington. The route just seems to get better each day as you head north and into the high-mountain areas beyond Lake Chelan. Remote camping and meals under the stars make lifetime memories in this beautiful wilderness route.
MOSS AVENTURES, EXPEDITIONS, GEAR, APPAREL, OUTPOSTS
A Legacy of Adventure
The Moss Tents brand was born in the imagination of one man: fabric artist and designer Bill Moss. Most widely known for the invention of the pop tent, Bill Moss revolutionized the way people around the world experienced the outdoors in temporary structures.
Bill and his wife, Marilyn, and his production team designed thousands of unorthodox tents, structures and canopies using tensile architectural shape and form. Changing the industry of camping forever. The breadth and depth of Moss inventions has a nearly omniscient impact on modern outdoor backpacking, camping and expedition adventures. Extreme expeditionists and adventurers of all kinds idolize the Moss brand for its contributions to the wondrous experiences Moss technologies have enabled them to experience.
And now, the evolution of Moss has arrived. The imagination, ingenuity and unbounded creativity of Bill Moss lives on in his progeny: Jeffrey Moss. Where Bill’s design genius was tactile, Jeff’s is experiential and transformational. Where Bill’s fascination was fabric, Jeff’s lies in the adventure and itself. The Moss brand, therefore, has evolved from tents and gear to expeditions, outfitters and outposts. Moss now calls upon its earliest apostles to reunite, while also offering something for their new wave of flag bearers - the everyday adventurer.
